The Prince Edward Island Fishermen's Association represents Island fish harvesters, provides a strong voice for members, keeps harvesters informed, and helps shape a strong future for PEI fisheries.
Who we are
The PEIFA began when Island fish harvesters came together to discuss issues affecting the fishery and to speak with one clear voice. Today, the Association represents PEI fish harvesters through advocacy, practical services, timely information, and local association governance.

In the late 1970s, the Association became financially self-sufficient and strengthened its independence.
The PEIFA was incorporated and restructured to include six local fishing associations with two directors from each local association.
The PEIFA became the recognized representative for core fishers under provincial fisheries legislation.
The PEIFA was originally formed when Island fish harvesters gathered to discuss the effects of a proposed trap limit. Those meetings showed the need for an organization that could represent fish harvesters to government and help fishing communities communicate across the Island.

The Association was formally incorporated in 1982. The incorporation restructuring included the local association representation model, with six local fishing associations and two directors from each local association.
The PEIFA is recognized as the representative for core fishers in Prince Edward Island under provincial fisheries legislation.
What we do
The PEIFA's work is focused on real fishery needs: representation, timely information, member support, and industry leadership on issues that affect fish harvesters and fishing communities.
The PEIFA brings forward Island fish harvester concerns to governments, regulators, and industry partners.
The Association helps keep fish harvesters informed about notices, meetings, programs, renewals, and fishery updates.
The office staff are able to provide practical answers to questions around membership, renewals and association services.
The PEIFA works with local associations and partners to support a sustainable future for Island fisheries.
Governance
The PEIFA is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of 12 members (two from each Local Association), and a President chosen from the board members by a vote by the delegates to the Annual General Meeting.
